About Big Thomas: Singer, Songwriter, and Saxophonist Ernie Thomas is Approaching Fifty years in the Music Business without the benefit of having had a commercial release. During the fifties, whenever a record executive would hear a demo by Ernie they would say that he sounded too much like Brook Benton. As a result of that comparison, No Recording Contract. Ernest Thomas (Big Ernie) was born in Atlanta, Ga. At the an early age, he sang with the choir of the Bethlehem Baptist Church, in Summerhill, Ga. His mother bought him a horn when he was eleven years old and he taught himself to play in a few weeks. He then bought a book on saxophones and learn to read and play properly. He learned well enough to play in his high school band. Ernie also played on a weekly radio show (WERD) in Atlanta, GA. In the early fifties, Ernie could be seen playing in many New York Night Clubs and the surrounding area. In 1963 Ernie became a bus driver for the City of New York until his retirement in 1984.
