Agua Dulce [Import]
California-based vibes player Cal Tjader, one of the leading figures in Latin jazz, recorded for Fantasy throughout the ’50s before moving on to Verve and his own label, Skye. He re-signed to Fantasy in 1971, and Agua Dulce was the second album released after his return. Featuring such fine young musicians as Pete and Coke Escovedo, it’s a mix of funk and Latin that uses early electronics to spectacular effect, most notably on the cover of the Rolling Stones’ Gimme Shelter. Other highlights include the percolating Ran Kan Kan; Descarga, and the title track, a mellow take on a Shuggie Otis side. Nine sublime performances with original artwork and new notes!
