With considerable vocal talent and a flair for fanciful word play, emerging singer/songwriter, Deborah Sachs, delivers the one-two punch with her engaging debut, Pure Imagination. An appealing jazz-inflected collection of 8 originals and 3 strikingly inventive arrangements of familiar/far-away favorites by other significant and diverse writers, Pure Imagination entices and enchants. After the pizzicato bass intro and the first inviting, "Come with me," there is no resisting being drawn into this winding labyrinth of ESCAPIST tunes and rhythms that range from delicate, intimate and lilting to exceedingly swinging and sassy. Sachs is a self-confessed wordsmith with a radiant spirit and supple alto who delivers just the right emotion to her songs, giving each it's particular hue and color. Her innovative medley of Singing in the Rain and Laughter in the Rain to a Bossa nova groove is a stand out, as is the ethereal piano/vocal, The Melodie Unheard. Evocative of the summer solstice and A Midsummer Night's Dream, it is lushly layered with echoing faerie voices and atmospheric arco bass, Ravishing support throughout comes from her virtuoso rhythm section largely borrowed from Louisville's genre-confounding Liberation Prophecy. The blend of Todd Hildreth's piano, Hammond B-3, and Rhodes Fender work with Darryel Cotton's drums, bass from either Tyrone Wheeler or Sonny Stephens and Craig Wagner's guitars is 'pure perfection,' especially when energized by the brilliant alto solos contributed by Jacob Duncan. In short, Pure Imagination does it all: engages, agitates & satisfies; amuses, comforts & intrigues; brings to life, preserves & shares the rich inner life of a convincing recording artist. The assortment and blending of styles along with the consistent high quality chops of singer and combo set this aptly named disc apart from the ordinary. Look for Pure Imagination in it's own dreamy world, atop the list of "must hear" CDs for 2007.
