Title: Lonely Street/Side By Side/Pop & Country
Artist: Lucille Starr , The Canadian Sweethearts

By the mid- to late-'60s, multi-instrumentalist Bob Regan (aka Bob Fredrickson) (mandolin/fiddle/guitar/harmonica/pedal steel) and then-wife Lucille Starr (aka Lucille Savoie) (vocals) had already established themselves as the Canadian Sweethearts in their native homeland. Their two LPs for Epic Records -- one of which was credited to Starr alone -- found them below the 49th Parallel in Music City USA, Nashville, TN. Under the direction of Billy Sherrill, the duo issued the pseudo-concept platter Side by Side: Pop and Country (1967), followed by Lucille Starr's Lonely Street (1969). Those long-players and eight associated non-LP tracks comprise this single-CD compilation, the first to anthologize their Epic material. The idea behind Side by Side: Pop and Country was to pair five unabashedly C&W cuts with another five primarily pop-oriented tunes. The down-home flavor of "Heartaches by the Number," "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" and "Looking Back to See" balances the more traditional "True Love, "Side by Side" and the somewhat misplaced "Winchester Cathedral." For Lonely Street, Sherrill turned the spotlight on to Starr as a solo artist, likewise serving up one of the album's best offerings on the heartfelt honky-tonk "Too Far Gone." It sets the mood for the lovelorn "Missing You," "(Bonjour Tristesse) Hello Sadness" and "Cry, Cry Darlin'." The Starr and Regan originals "Cajun Love" and "Full House" provide an upbeat contrast alongside the freewheelin' rockabilly of "Who's Gonna Stand by Me?." All 11 extras were available only on a handful of 45's, including "I Don't Trust Me Around You," "Before the Next Teardrop Falls," "Too Lonely Too Long" and "Is It Love" from Starr, as well as "More Than Money Can Buy," "Let's Wait a Little Longer," "Hey Sue!" and "You Were Worth the Wait" by the Canadian Sweethearts. ~ Lindsay Planer, All Music Guide
