Title:
Nonsequitur Of Silence *
Artist:
The Sneakers
The Sneakers: Chris Stamey, Robert Keely, Mitch Easter, Will Rigby, Robert Slater. In the late 1970s, before launching their more-famous later bands (the dBs and Let's Active, respectively) childhood friends Chris Stamey and Mitch Easter formed the influential band the Sneakers, whose total recorded output comprised one classic, Beatles-inspired EP and one LP. This 2007 release includes those recordings, plus their '92 reunion album and some unreleased tracks. It is pure nirvana for power-pop fans of any stripe, and showcases the melodic and lyrical talents of these underground legends, both before and after their days in the sun. The Sneakers, featuring a pre-dB's Chris Stamey and Let's Active's Mitch Easter were North Carolina's answer to Big Star and Cheap Trick, fusing catchy Byrds-esque riffs with the Anglo melodiousness of the Beatles and the pop complexity of Todd Rundgren and Joe Jackson. This remastered collection of their mid-'70s independent recordings serves as a great introduction to the careers that would follow, and a solid lesson in how to conjure two- to three-minute pop songs out of thin air and lodge them in a listener's brain for an eternity. ~ James Christopher Monger
