Most artists and musicians usually describe their work as something that they can\'t live without... like oxygen or food. They have similar stories of being a slave to their art. Indeed, like so many others, this is the case with Jarred Nicklen. Music has always been an integral part of his life for as long as he can remember. He eats, breathes and sleeps it. End of story. Or is it? As a writer, Jarred has written hundreds of tunes throughout his career. Some treasured, and some left in the \'song pile\' until he\'s ready to meet their acquaintance again. From this \'well\' of notes, emotions and lyrics, he only dips a few times to get something for himself. Most of Jarred\'s early work was written with the inspiration of others in mind. The last thing in Jarred\'s mind during those years was to become a singer... he only wanted to write and perform on his piano... and maybe start a few guitar tracks. Jarred wrote numerous songs and lyrics that way for the various bands he was in while growing up in Saskatchewan. While most of his fellow band members would be compelled to careers other than music, Jarred was always the one to keep his music alive and get closer to realizing his dreams. It didn\'t matter if the journey was measured in inches or miles. He had no choice. Just like his fellow musicians who went to follow their hearts, Jarred followed his... but was lucky enough to not have to leave music to do it. He had always been in the right field. The only thing Jarred left behind was the notion that he would never have to sing any of his own material. Now based in Calgary, Jarred has formed the band Discourse Poetic with lead singer Amy Thiessen. Discourse Poetic allows Jarred to deliver some of his more female driven songs through Amy. With Discourse, Jarred writes, co-writes, performs on keyboard and guitar, and sings both backing (and sometimes lead) vocals. The music Discourse Poetic creates is not only a wonderful blend of both Jarred and Amy Thiessen\'s musical creativity, but also a means of keeping Jarred\'s early work alive. But Jarred has always been one to challenge himself, and found it time to break the bounds of watching others sing his music. He needed to do more than background vocals on his original material. Jarred needed to raise the bar and see if he could do what he never imagined. He decided to \'dip into the well\' and take a few of his original songs and give them the treatment he\'d intended when writing them. He has also recently made a conscious effort to write more songs for himself, instead of for others. But songs are like children, and Jarred admits it\'s difficult to decide which to keep and which to give to the Discourse Poetic family. One would think that working on a solo career while continuing duties in another band would upset Jarred\'s musical journey. But this isn\'t the case. In fact, if anything, it has balanced Jarred\'s need to create something for himself AND the others that continue to inspire his writing. Yet another challenge for Jarred has been writing songs for himself AND Discourse Poetic while working on albums for both. Never one to get discouraged, Jarred takes every hurdle in stride while delivering what he does best... dynamically heartfelt music with thought provoking lyrics. And that is hardly the end of the story... it\'s just the beginning of a new chapter!
