About the snare drum, Jason Baker says, 'The snare drum is seldom thought of as a serious solo concert instrument. It lacks the obvious melodic and harmonic capabilities of other musical instruments. But these issues are not a hindrance to composing for the snare drum, and actually allow for the development of new approaches to composition as well as listening and appreciation. The absence of traditional melodic and harmonic deviced forces a greater attention on the inherent nature of each sound as a primary aspect of the music. For the performer, issues of instrument choice, tuning, implement selection, and acoustics take on a newly heightened level of importance.'
