Smell the Love
After a dozen years of drumming in Arkansas garage, punk and improv bands, Jerry Colburn makes a radical shift to loop-based IDM/electronica for his first solo release, 'Smell the Love.' The Spinal Tap reference in the title suggests the humor, warmth and intelligence of his music and comparisons can be made to artists/musics as diverse as Carl Stalling (of Warner Brothers cartoon fame), hip hop, Esquivel, AGF, soundtrack recordings, Spike Jones, Mouse on Mars and Amon Tobin. Colburn's rock influences keep the toes tapping while orchestral strings, banjo blurbs, Middle Eastern sounds and other brief forays into musical exotica keep the brain involved as well. 'Smell the Love' (23 songs, 52 minutes) explores an extremely diverse vocabulary of sounds set in compositions that seem instantly complete.
