After All This
This album was recorded in a cabin on the water in Juneau, Alaska. The pictures seen on the back cover and throughout the lyrics section show the kind of view we got to enjoy on nights (depending on the time of year) and weekends as we recorded these songs. The songs on this album are divided roughly down the middle between things that I actually experienced and ideas that came to me while day dreaming. When it came time to think about recording an album I knew just how important a good sound engineer was to the whole process and I was thoroughly confident in a man by the name of Stephan Felkl. I met Stephan when I first started playing shows around Juneau during 2002. I substitute taught for a 3rd grade class at a local elementary school and happened to bring my guitar that day to aide in some class activities. I played some songs for the class, and since I had a show coming up, invited anyone from the class to come. One girl ended up coming and brought her dad, Stephan. He gave me his card that night and he's done sound for just about every show I've played since. While recording the album Stephan set up his gear at the cabin I was living in and we would record in the evenings and on weekends whenever we could. Start to finish the c.d. took over two years with the recording, artwork and duplication. I really enjoy writing songs and trying to improve in that process, but it's getting to play my songs with other people, and seeing how they add to them, that really brings them to life for me. Which leads me to the other musicians who played on the album... Rod Crist did a ton of lead work with mandolin and guitar as well as vocal harmonies. Rod and I really got our start playing music together while working and playing for the kids out at Mendenhall River Elementary School. Naomi Hooley, who plays piano and sings harmonies on the c.d., is a singer/songwriter with a ton of talent. She's starting to record an album of her own and I consider it a real privilege to have had her record on mine. The bass player, Tully Devine, is a very talented guy who unfortunately moved out of Juneau shortly after recording with us. The last person to play on the album was Kyle Brady. Kyle is a very good lead guitar player who added the finishing touches to our project.
