Led Zeppelin 3
Those who expected nothing but crushing, distorted guitar rock from Led Zeppelin were somewhat mystified by 1970’s Led Zeppelin III, which balanced heavy-hitting assaults (Immigrant Song; Out on the Tiles; Celebration Day) with folk-flavored acoustic songs (Friends; Gallows Pole; Bron-Y-Aur Stomp; Hats Off to Roy Harper; Tangerine). That split between hard rockers and acoustic tunes would prove to be way ahead of its time (think about all those ’80s bands who shot to fame dividing their albums thusly), and Led Zeppelin III would prove to be another certified classic. Fans will froth over the bonus disc here: outtakes of Immigrant Song; Friends; Celebration Day; Since I’ve Been Loving You; Gallows Pole, and That’s the Way; an instrumental version of Out on the Tiles called Bathroom Sound; an instrumental version of Bron-Y-Aur Stomp called Jennings Farm Blues, and their previously unheard take on the blues classics Keys to the Highway/Trouble in Mind! Atlantic/Swan Song.
