My Jangling Heart
Lokomotiv Stockport is the band/format that records and performs the songs of Frank Pelham. His career was effectively over before it began when he began to suffer physical and mental ill health in 1995 but he has continued to write. He formed Lokomotiv Stockport during a lengthy period of convalescence to record and release the songs that were just too good not to be heard. Frank grew up in Manchester, England & was previously in indie band \'The Lowthers\' whose highlights were probably recording on Cog Sinister (for Mark E Smith of The Fall) and supporting \'My Bloody Valentine\'. He lists his influences as The Beatles, The Smiths, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Pet Shop Boys, Leonard Cohen and Patsy Cline. Lokomtiv Stockport sound a bit like a cross between The Smiths and Creedence Clearwater Revival, a fight between Leonard Cohen and Patsy Cline, a companionable silence shared between the Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Pet Shop Boys, a memorandum of understanding between The Wedding Present and the Carter Family, a custody battle between Gillian Welch and the Buzzcocks. Other kind of similar artists would be Pedro the Lion, Spoon, The Lilac Time and the Go-Betweens. In many ways the first three Lokomotiv Stockport release are \'lost\' albums. Most of the songs on \'My Jangling Heart\'were written in the mid 1990s when the album was first conceived. Sadly ill health meant that recording did not start until 2005 and was only completed this year (2008). While My Jangling Heart consists of \'10 songs about romantic pain and incompetence\', the follow up album \'It happens to us all\' deals with \'grief, misery and depression in northern England towards the end of the 20th century\'. The third album \'Postmodern Blues\' is to do with \'expression, identity and meaning\'. Despite the intellectual and occasionally morbid description of the music this music still deserves to be described as \'sparkling indie pop\' or put another way \'Simple, intelligent pop music\'. It happens to us all is scheduled for release in January 2009. Preview tracks from this and from \'Postmodern Blues\' can be heard at at myspace.
