Richard Meale's music traces a path from avant-garde pioneer to poet of lyrical melody. The first Australian to engage directly with the radical developments in European music in the wake of World War II, he was also the first to establish a lasting presence in the field of opera, and this album includes the superb Monologue from his second opera, Mer de Glace, as well as his powerfully emotional Homage to García Lorca; Clouds now and then, inspired by the aesthetics of Japanese culture; and the hauntingly beautiful Cantilena pacifica.
