His grandfather, Walter Manaday played drums for Louis Armstrong, and his mother, Mary Sterling Leonard played honky-tonk blues piano and in church, along with having a superb velvet voice. Melvin grabbed a pair of drumsticks before he grabbed his first bottle and he has been pounding out rhythms for as long as he could remember. Singing at church and other events, at the tender age of 10, these talents began to develop Melvin's childhood with music, song and appreciation for the unique southern sound named "funk". His professional career started in the internationally acclaimed nightclubs of the New Orleans French Quarter. As a singer, songwriter and producer, Melvin's style of singing is funky and he is likely to become one of the hottest stars of the R&B world. Melvin first new CD release was titled the Melvin Leonard: The Prince of the Blues in 1996.
