Plays Blues & Boogie Woogie
Ray Skjelbred stomps and rolls the blues like a steady rollin' man on this CD recorded in 2002 on a Grotrian-Steinweg piano. He is well known in the Bay Area as a traditional jazz player with a strong blues background, and he says "I don't draw a line between blues and jazz, but I know the line is sometimes real." Back when Ray was learning to play the piano from Johnny Witwer, he was introduced to the blues of Leroy Carr and Big Maceo, and the blues have been a part of his repertoire and style ever since. This CD of piano instrumentals includes tunes by Ray, or by or reminiscent of Jimmy Yancy, Big Maceo, Art Hodes, Jimmy Rogers, Leroy Carr, George Zack, Cripple Clarence Lofton, Jelly Roll Morton, Tiny Parham and Washington Phillips.
