~ San Francisco Saxophone Quartet
The San Francisco Saxophone Quartet was founded by David Schrader in 1977, primarily as a rehearsal group to play classical works for saxophone. By 1978 the group was accepting engagements in clubs and restaurants and eventually, street performances. Gradually they became a symbol of musical San Francisco, notably being asked to perform on cable car rides in 1982 the day before the famous system was shut down for two years of necessary repairs, and again in 1984 on the day the cable cars began running again. From 1989 to 1999 the Quartet was heard regularly at Post and Grant Streets, delighting tourists and residents alike.
