Soulwork Squares Off with the Super Villian (Live)[CD]
ORIGINAL SOUL MUSIC. With chicken-shack beats and the tight stylings of an established Motown ensemble, Soulwork has developed a sound that transcends categorization. Although their 2001 Boston Music Award award for 'Best Funk Band' gained them recognition among the local talent, their popularity extends throughout the northeast. Three of the founding members, drummer Kevin Emerson, bassist Ryan J. Harris, and vocalist Sinclair Jennings Jr. began their individual musical careers in Connecticut. In 1998 they formed RKDS ('Arcadias'), a soul outfit based in the Pioneer Valley area of Massachusetts. One year later, Soulwork was conceived with Jeff Blancato on guitar. The foursome performed at venues in the Boston area, Western Mass, New York City, Maine, and Connecticut, where the Hartford Advocate nominated them as 'Best Party Band.' After relocating to Boston in 2000, they produced their first market-quality CD, 'Connect.' This work highlights a variety of Soulwork's capabilities, and is representative of the spectrum of musical influences that characterize the band such as Prince, D'Angelo, old school Motown, and Peter Gabriel, as well as New Orleans' groove and Miami-Vice-like hot night sounds. Harris, Emerson, and Jennings added the over-the-top West Coast grooves of guitarist Gabe Johnson (formerly of Jive Talkin' Robots) and the cajun-style blackened catfish cookin' of keys player Josh Gold (formerly of Honeypot) to the permanent line-up of Soulwork in the summer of 2001. Within two months of Josh and Gabe's membership, Soulwork began to sell out venues around New England and has continued to rapidly expand their fan base. With the release of their new live CD, 'Soulwork Squares Off With The Super Villian (Live)', they are ready to take the nation by storm. Press: 'The bumper sticker that graces the car fenders of Soulwork fans reads 'Groove is Good,' and this Boston-based band definitely delivers a good groove.' THE HARTFORD ADVOCATE 'SWEET SOUL. This winter it's going to be different; you're not going to hole up in your apartment with videos, pizza and mug after mug of hot chocolate every night. You're going to get out and shake your ass just like you did all summer long. Boston's Soulwork returns to the Big Easy, 55 Market Street, Portland tonight for a steamy workout. Funk bands can easily cheese out their sound by focusing too much on the covers, the 'ain't nothin' but a party' elements; the cartoon version of funk and soul. Soulwork is a seriously groovy band. It's a great combination; you can grind your hips into your partner's booty while basking in singer Sinclair Jennings, Jr's soulful voice. If all those wig-wearing, 'mothership' name-checking cover bands ruined funk music for you, it's not too late to be redeemed by Soulwork's tasteful, smoldering soul.' THE PORTLAND PHEONIX (from 8 Days A Week by Josh Rogers) 'Lead vocalist Sinclair 'Skip' Jennings Jr. sounded like he could have been a singer in a fantastic Gospel Church. His rich, luscious vocals flowed wonderfully with Soulwork's grooving melodies, and when he sang, he got really into it, squinting his eyes and gyrating in his wild, musically-driven dance moves.' BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY STUDENT PAPER 'Soulwork has built a reputation for dynamic live performances of original soul and funk music. Their songs feature captivating vocals reminiscent of Motown greats and a skin-tight rhythm section.' THE BOSTON MUSIC AWARDS 2000 'New Millennium R&B/Soul and fast becoming a Beantown favorite. Soulwork exhibits one of the Northeast's tightest rhythm sections dancing just below a voice that may have Motown scurrying for a look.' THE NORTHAMPTON MUSIC FESTIVAL 2001 'Soul-groove quartet which features powerful vocals, razor-sharp execution and a classic, funky soul feel.' THE HOUSE OF BLUES 'Soulwork is setting the standard for modern soul.' TONIC PRODUCTIONS 'The funkiest melodies heard in these parts in quite some time... Funky... Chunky... Infectious... Classic...' METRONOME MAGAZINE 'When I hear Skip sing, and I hear this band play, I get that feeling... Like I'm eight years old again, hearing soul music for the first time.' STAR DROOKER, CLUB OWNER 'While most bands claim to be soul music, this is the first band I've seen in 10 years that actually qualifies. Having recently added Gabe Johnson (Jive Talkin' Robots) on guitar & Josh Gold (Honeypot) on keys, these guys are ready to take off. With a nomination for best funk and soul act in Boston at last year's Boston Music Awards, you gotta catch them before they get too big!' THE PLANETARY GROUP 'Hello! Merl Saunders was here last night. The band loved your disk. I was blaring it at the end of the night. They loved it!' SULLY'S PUB, HARTFORD CT 'Real Deal Soul.' THE NORTHAMPTON ADVOCATE 'Some of the best damned funk & soul you will ever hear!' FOCUS POWER 'This soul-groove quartet from Boston makes crowds bump! Dynamic song writing, powerful vocal melodies, razor sharp execution, and over-the-top showmanship!' CARMEN VERANDAH CLUB, BAR HARBOR 'Boston is fast becoming THE SOURCE for great R&B, funk, and all the related children of the genre. With press and buzz galore, SOULWORK delivers on soooo many levels. Tight, booty-shakin' grooves and rich, soulful singing from Sinclair Jennings Jr.... turning heads and ears to the east-coast-Bo-town...' BEARDSLEE CASTLE.
