Progeny: Seven Shows from Seventy-Two[CD]
~ Yes(Boxed Set, Deluxe Edition, 14PC)
In October 1972, Yes looked to top the massive success of Fragile, which had just hit #4 in the U.S. that January. The band’s creative juices were, indeed, flowing, and even the colossal size of the three tracks on their new LP Close to the Edge—the nearly 19-minute title suite, the 10-minute And You and I suite (part two of which became a chart hit) and the nearly nine-minute Siberian Khatru—couldn’t keep it from becoming Yes’s all-time champ on the U.S. charts ( #3). This was the heyday for prog rock, and this new release is manna from heaven for prog-rock lovers: *never-before-heard* live recordings from the band’s Close to the Edge tour, the biggest tour they had yet done. Captured in October and November 1972, the tracks on the 2-CD and 180-gram triple-vinyl editions recreate the tour’s set list, selecting the best performances of each track from all the tapes. And the greatest gift of all for the Yes fan: the 14-CD set in a cigarette-style box (with bound book) that contains seven complete shows—which, by the way, were only recently discovered by the band. These concerts led up to the shows heard on Yessongs; the latest audio technology brings out incredible sonic detail as you hear Opening (Excerpt from Firebird Suite); Siberian Khatru; I’ve Seen All Good People; Heart of the Sunrise; the And You and I and Close to the Edge suites; Excerpts from Six Wives of Henry VIII; Roundabout; Yours Is No Disgrace, and more. If you think there will be a sameness to those shows across Canada, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and New York, you don’t know Yes! The set lists remain pretty much the same, but the performances are strikingly different—and awe-inspiring. Atlantic/Rhino.
