SOTU are a jazz quintet from Oslo, Norway that combine energetic live performances with a poignant sense of melody, mixing up a wide range of styles in the process; folk, balkan, ska, flamenco and more. SOTU was formed in 2006 by alto saxophonist Tim Lowerson and bassist Ture Ringereide. These two are also the main composers in the group. Here's a sample of the reviews for Sotu's 2nd album, Villspor: ' ... a joyful recording that is thoroughly recommended!' (Australian Jazz Scene). 'Exciting songs with excellent musicians, a sure-fire winner... Throughout the album it's thrilling to see what waits around the next corner and could there be a better recommendation for any album than that? (Dagsavisen, Norwegian daily). 'SOTU have found something that is theirs alone. I get the impression that the band can be musical fireworks live. SOTU are a fresh new bloom in the Norwegian jazz garden.' (Jazznytt, Norwegian jazz publication) At times intense and wild on this well-played second album by the Norwegian jazz quintet. It starts slowly with some cautious tones and then it explodes in Balkan inspired madness. Kim Koffeld (trumpet) and Tim Lowerson (saxophone) have the lead roles here, but they are propelled by an excellent rhythm section with Ture Ringereide (bass) Geir Haugarvoll (drums) and Bård Bjørke (guitar)... This is a very varied record and the musicians weave in and out of traditional jazz territory. It is impressive that the whole thing is recorded live. This is a demanding method but when it works it gives the music vitality and depth. (Rune Westengen, Romerikets Blad) SOTU have made an interesting and pulsating jazz album, filled with crafty arrangements and imaginative thematic shifts... SOTU provide for a very positive listening experience. (Anders Dalen, Hamar Arbeiderblad)
