Those Lavender Whales began as a recording project for Aaron Graves after relocating to Nashville, TN from Columbia, SC in 2003. Originally a drummer, Graves began experimenting with layering instruments and found sounds into whimsical pop songs that were often sent to friends or performed in close quarters. By 2007 Graves had constructed three handmade EPs, the final being "Let's Be Friends! I'm Sorry I'm So Sleepy." while the first two are documented in the cassette collection "Pilgrims, Friends, & Blood-ties." "Tomahawk of Praise," Those Lavender Whales' first proper full-length, is available on LP, CD, and digitally by Fork & Spoon Records. The album was written, recorded, and mixed over the course of about 3 years in Nashville, TN in a friend's basement studio. During that time Nashville flooded and Graves married (now drummer) Jessica Bornick. They soon entered into parenthood and moved back to Columbia, SC resulting in "Tomahawk" becoming more of a contemplation on celebrating complex situations rather than just a collection of light-hearted pop songs. The album sways between intimate confessions and lush arrangements of off-kilter instruments while never losing the charm or honesty that brings the whole together. "Tomahawk of Praise" is a result of numerous individuals lending their talents to help others express themselves in constructive ways. We hope that everything from the colorful artwork to the welcoming sounds of the songs exemplifies the kind of community Fork & Spoon is trying to build.
